Loudly rejecting Burma's new constitution

Saturday, February 09, 2008

The international community must loudly reject the junta's latest so-called "democratic" offering. We've already witnessed know how the junta practice democracy, having placed Aung San Suu Kyi under house arrest since her election win in 1990.

An effective democracy, you reckon?

This time, the junta say they will hold a referendum on a new constitution in May and hold elections in 2010. This latest measure will transfer power to, rather than away from, this barbarous gang of governing criminals.

NLD spokesman Nyan Win has already highlighted the absurdity of the government's announcement: "The announcement is vague, incomplete and strange," because, he says, "even before knowing the results of the referendum, the government has already announced that elections will be held in 2010." In other words, the government has presupposed the approval of the draft constitution.

But most troubling of all, "the new constitution also disqualifies presidential candidates who are 'entitled to the rights and privileges of a ... foreign country' — thereby barring Suu Kyi, whose late husband was British."
